The time is now for low-cost real-time arbovirus sequencing
DeZi partners will sequence RT-PCR-positive dengue and Zika samples in their laboratories with support from the network. The work is built on a genotype-agnostic, pan-dengue primer scheme that produces whole genomes directly from clinical and wastewater samples on platforms that already operate in partner labs.
Sequence data feeds into real-time phylodynamic models that integrate antigenic cartography, force-of-infection estimates and lineage genetics to forecast which DENV and ZIKV variants are likely to expand — which lineages should be prioritised for vaccine and diagnostic redesign, and where outbreak responses should focus first.
Timely molecular detection is essential for arbovirus sequencing, determining which samples can be successfully sequenced and translated into actionable surveillance insights.
